Bio:

Tom, originally from the UK, holds a degree in Mathematics from the University of Warwick, where he specialised in applied mathematics. During his degree, he spent time studying in Paris and subsequently worked in a research lab there, focussing on applying machine learning to the evolution of language. As a keen sports enthusiast and following experience working in the fantasy sports industry, Tom has been inspired to focus his research on sports video, with a particular interest in making sports broadcasting more accessible.

PhD research:

This research project aims to leverage artificial intelligence to automatically generate live Audio Descriptive Commentary (ADC) for football matches. Unlike traditional video and radio commentary, ADC is specifically designed for blind and visually impaired fans, providing a more immersive experience through detailed descriptions of the game, such as including the colours of players’ kits and the precise positions of the ball and players on the pitch. With limited research already conducted in this area, there is significant potential for innovation, paving the way for more accessible sports broadcasting for a larger audience.
