Bio:

Sam is an interdisciplinary researcher working across Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP).

He trained as an architect at the University of Cambridge, where he explored frameworks for evaluating the social impact, functionality and build quality of the built environment. Later Sam graduated with an MSc in Computer Science from Imperial College London, where he explored dimensionality reduction techniques as tools for thinking about data mixtures when training deep neural networks.

Before starting his PhD, Sam co-founded Turinglab, an online learning platform that has reached over 500,000 students and helps educators teach children to code. Along the way he has built machine learning systems to support the co-creation of educational content and consulted on ML pipelines for publishing and behavioural-insights startups.

PhD research:

Sam’s research asks how we might design systems that support responsible human-AI interaction. He is interested in how people read, think and write with generative AI, and in what using these tools does to human cognition, capability and output. A growing body of research points to harms such as homogenisation, cognitive deskilling and low-quality work; Sam is interested in whether agentic frameworks and model alignment can be used to counter them. Working primarily with school teachers and within academia, he draws on methods from HCI, social science and NLP.
